INTRO - BEYING & TEACHING GOD'S COMMANDMENTS - MATTHEW 5:19

Intro: Obeying & Teaching God's Commandments - Matthew 5:19

INTRO: In Matthew 5:19 Jesus talks about the GREAT ETERNAL REWARDS IN HEAVEN for: Obeying & Teaching God's Word, and His Commandments (1 John 2:3-6) to others— OR the Negative Consequences for: Ignoring, Breaking, & then Teaching other people NOT to Obey even the LEAST of God's Commandments. We're Not Saved by our Works (Eph 2:8-9), but we Prove (show Evidence, Fruit) that we're Saved by our Works (1 John 2:3-6, Matt 7:15-20, Luke 3:8). John 14:15 Jesus says, "If you love Me Obey My Commandments." (Also in John 14:21,23-24, John 15:10,14, John 3:36, John 8:31, Luke 6:46). This is a Bible Study on Sanctification for a True Believer (John 17:17). This is NOT a Legalistic Commentary on Rule Keeping or how to be Saved.
  • Matt 5:19 Jesus warns, "So if you IGNORE (BREAK) the LEAST (SMALLEST) COMMANDMENT and TEACH OTHERS TO DO THE SAME, you will be called the LEAST in the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. But anyone who OBEYS GOD'S LAWS (GOD'S WORD) and TEACHES THEM them will be called GREAT in the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN."

The Consequences of Practicing or Teaching
Obedience or Disobedience to any of God's Word - John MacArthur on Matt 5:19

John MacArthur Talking About Matt 5:19 & the Believers Rewards— (Emphasis is SO4J's)

"The consequences of Practicing or Teaching disobedience of ANY of God's Word is to be called LEAST in the Kingdom of Heaven (1 Cor 3:15). Determining RANK IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is entirely God's prerogative (Matt 20:20-28), and Jesus declares that He will hold those in LOWEST ESTEEM who hold HIS WORD IN LOW ESTEEM. There is no impunity (free from punishment) for Believers who: DISOBEY, DISCREDIT, OR BELITTLE GOD'S LAW (God's Word)—see 2 Cor 5:10 below. That Jesus does not refer to loss of salvation is clear from the fact, that though offenders will be called LEAST, they will still be in the Kingdom of Heaven. The Positive result is that whoever KEEPS and TEACHES GOD'S WORD, he shall be called GREAT IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. Here again Jesus mentions the TWO aspects of DOING AND TEACHING. Kingdom citizens are to uphold EVERY part of God's Laws (God's Word) both in their LIVING and in their TEACHING." (John MacArthur — Grace To You Ministries)

Do Not Minimize Any of God's Word & His Commandments - Obey & Teach Others

Jesus is telling us in Matt 5:19 that we are NOT to Ignore or Minimize any of God's Word. In fact, a True Believer is to Obey, and then Teach His Word, and His Commandments to others. We Teach others by being a GOOD EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW too. This leads to Rewards in Heaven by Jesus— who will someday commend & reward those who Obeyed & Taught His Commandments to others as being called "GREAT IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN."

John MacArthur (below) Talks about how Believers also "Teach" through Example: (Emphasis is SO4J's)

"Jesus’ warning does NOT simply apply to Official or Formal Teachers. EVERY PERSON TEACHES. By our EXAMPLE we continually help those around us either to be MORE OBEDIENT or MORE DISOBEDIENT. We also Teach by what we SAY. When we speak lovingly and respectfully of God’s Word, we TEACH LOVE AND RESPECT FOR IT (GOD'S WORD). When we speak disparagingly or slightingly of God’s Word, we teach DISREGARD AND DISRESPECT FOR IT (GOD'S WORD). When we IGNORE its demands, we give LOUD TESTIMONY to its UNIMPORTANCE to us." (John MacArthur — Grace To You Ministries)

Take a look at these Scriptures below on how we are to be a GODLY EXAMPLE to others in what we SAY, HOW YOU LIVE, etc.

Being a GOOD EXAMPLE For Others to Follow is Also a Way of Teaching Others

  • 1 Tim 4:12 "Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an EXAMPLE TO ALL THE BELIEVERS in what you SAY, in THE WAY YOU LIVE, in YOUR LOVE, YOUR FAITH, and in YOUR PURITY."

  • Titus 2:7 "You yourself MUST BE AN EXAMPLE TO THEM by doing GOOD WORKS OF EVERY KIND. Let EVERYTHING YOU DO reflect the INTEGRITY and SERIOUSNESS of your TEACHING."

  • John 13:15 Jesus says, "I have given you an EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW. Do as I have Done to you"

  • 1 Thess 1:7 Paul says, "You have become an EXAMPLE TO ALL THE BELIEVERS in Greece— throughout both Macedonia and Achaia."

  • Phil 3:17 Paul says, "Dear Brothers and Sisters, PATTERN YOUR LIVES AFTER MINE, and LEARN from those who FOLLOW OUR EXAMPLE."

  • 2 Thess 3:9 Paul says, "We certainly had the right to ask you to Feed us, but we wanted to give you an EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW."

  • Eph 5:2 "Live a life filled with love, FOLLOWING THE EXAMPLE OF CHRIST. He loved us and offered Himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God."

  • 1 Tim 1:16 Paul says, "But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a PRIME EXAMPLE OF HIS GREAT PATIENCE with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive Eternal Life."

Being A BAD EXAMPLE For Others To Follow - A Stumbling Block

We are NOT TO TEACH OTHERS by being A BAD EXAMPLE to follow, or what Jesus calls a STUMBLING BLOCK. These people below were not True Believers obviously.

  • Mark 9:41-42 Jesus says, "For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his REWARD (SURELY BE REWARDED). But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to STUMBLE, it would be BETTER FOR HIM IF A MILLSTONE WERE HUNG AROUND HIS NECK, and he were thrown into the sea."

  • 3 John 1:9-13 John says, " I wrote to the Church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the Leader, refuses to have anything to do with us. When I come, I will Report some of the things he is doing and the Evil accusations he is making against us (JOHN IS NAMING NAMES). Not only does he refuse to welcome the traveling teachers, he also tells others not to help them. And when they do help, he puts them out of the Church. Dear friend, DON'T LET THIS BAD EXAMPLE INFLUENCE YOU. FOLLOW ONLY WHAT IS GOOD. Remember that those who DO GOOD PROVE THAT THEY ARE GOD'S CHILDREN, and those who DO EVIL PROVE THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW GOD."

  • 1 Cor 8:9 "Beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a STUMBLING BLOCK to those who are WEAK."

  • Rom 14:13 "Not to put a STUMBLING BLOCK or cause to fall in our Brother's way."

3 Examples of Those Who Minimized Their Sin

Jesus does NOT want us to minimize any of God's Word, or any of God's Commandments, even what appears to us to be the LEAST of His Commandments.

  • Adam & Eve broke God's One Command Gen 2:15-17 & Gen 3:1-24), which APPEARED to be NO BIG DEAL— or the LEAST of God's Commandments— in not eating the Fruit off the Tree. That One Sin kicked them out of God's Presence— out of the Garden of Eden. (James 2:10)

In Acts 5:1-10 it tells us about a Story of a man Ananias, and his wife Sapphira who LIED to the Apostles that they had sold some property and gave the Full Amount to the Apostles, when they DID NOT give the Full Amount. God's Judgment fell on them for this one Sin of Lying, and they both died that day. They must have minimized this Secret Sin of Lying. God sees everything, we cannot lie to Him or hide anything from Him (Heb 4:13). He does not minimize any sin.

  • Judas, the Disciple who betrayed Jesus, use to Steal on a regular basis from the Ministry of Jesus (John 12:6). He must have minimized this Secret Sin to himself, thinking he would never be caught. God doesn't minimize Sin, He is Holy— and he was caught! (1 Peter 1:14-17)

  • Numbers 32:23 "You have sinned against the Lord; You may be sure that your SIN WILL FIND YOU OUT."

New Testament Commandments To Obey - Out of a Love For Jesus (John 14:15)

In the New Testament there are over 1,050 Commandments given such as— Eph 5:25 "Husband's love your wives"...etc. In Romans 13:1-7 it talks about: Submitting to Governing Authorities (Paying Taxes, and the obeying the Laws of the Land), as they are set up by God to protect us, and help us. These Commands in the Bible are not only for our earthly good, but they will help Jesus & God the Father determine a True Believers Eternal Rewards in Heaven (1 Cor 3:10-15; 2 Cor 5:10-11, Rom 14:10-12).

Many people can minimize Romans 13 which talks about Obeying the Laws of the Land, and being told to Submit to the Government Authorities (that is if the Government is not telling us to sin of course). Obeying the Laws of the Land might mean: Obeying the Traffic Laws of NOT Speeding, or NOT turning right on Red Light at a "Do Not Turn on Red" Sign.

Once again we are not to minimize any of God's Word & His Commands— whether they are Big or Little. We are to instead strive to run our Race, with God's Grace, in such a way that we Highly Esteem, Listen, Study, and Obey all of God's Word (out of a Great Love for Jesus - John 14:21; John 14:15, John 15:14), and then turn around and teach God's Commandments & His Word to all. We will be Judged on what we did and didn't do in God's Word.

  • James 4:17 "It is SIN to know what you ought TO DO and then NOT DO IT.

Now let's take a look at the List of the 1,050 Commandments in the New Testament
